"Ya know, the chances of you having to use CPR or anything like that outside of the the fitness center is not very likely. I would say that if I am ever faced with having to use it, it will be at work."
Ha. To think I said that just yesterday. Little did I know, I'd be a first responder in this...
I get out of Brenen's jeep to hear a huge CRASH. I look behind me knowing instantly it is a car wreck. The white car was just hitting the street light. Brenen immediately called the police. We both ran over, and the girl in the white car got out and started to panic. She asked to use my phone, and I said yes. Then we realized the driver of the black car wasn't visable. At this point we had about 4 others already at the car, trying to get the passenger door open. I saw one guy opened the drivers side door, and that is when I realized who ever it was, was laying over the passenger seat. I moved closer, trying not to get in the way, while 3 guys (including Brenen) tried to get the door open. When they finally did, I saw her. Laying there. Face down towards the floor. Not moving. I was worried she had died... Then people started to panic. "Get her out of the car!" "Keep her straight!" "She's breathing, but not reponsive.." Then I heard the sirens, saw the lights, and felt some of the weight lift off my shoulders. The guy in the Tracker by this point had been able to open his door and get out of his car that was leaking something.
When the ambulance arrived, every one backed off and watched them get the lady out of her car within just a few minutes. She had started talking, only saying things like "Ow, ouch, ughhh." I was just glad she was alive. The girl driving the white car was way back, on my phone, crying. They finally brought her over to a cop car to calm her down. The guy driving the Tracker told us what had happened.
His light was green. He was in the left turning lane, and pulled out to wait for the girl driving the black car to go straight. That is when the girl driving the white car ran the red light, and t-boned the black car, which hit the Tracker. The force of the hit caused the white car to spin into the street light head on. The driver of the white car was only 16, or so I hear. Everyone was okay, except the girl who was taken away in the ambulance. I wish I could find out how she is doing.
I just can't help but wonder... What in the world was that young girl doing, to drive through a red light that had been red for AT LEAST 3 seconds. It was red long enough for the black car to make it half way through the intersection. I just don't understand. I feel horrible for her. I can't imagine how awful that would be to know you were the reason for the accident, and you were the reason a lady was taken to the hospital on a stretcher. I also just wish that lady had been wearing her seat belt. If she had, I'm sure she would have walked away like the others had.
It is crazy how much your life can change, for better or worse, in a second. But its also times like this you see the good in people. Everyone worked together to make sure nothing went from bad to worse. No one was going to let that lady die. And while I used to selfishly figure some one like me would never have to know CPR, or how to use and AED... I guess that is the one good thing that my job has brought to me. I am very thankful I would know what to do. And I would urge anyone who isn't CPR certified to do so. You NEVER know when you'll incounter an accident where you'd be the only one who would know what to do. You'll never regret being able to save someone's life.
